Ice-T Looks Back at His Towering Career & Explains the Term “OG.”
Ice-T never set out to become a legend. The iconic rapper, 67, just wanted to survive, speak his truth, and make noise loud enough to be heard. Decades later, he stands as one of hip-hop’s sharpest voices and one of television’s most familiar faces.
In a recent talk on the “Allison Interviews” podcast, the rapper and actor looked back at his long career and broke down a term that now lives in everyday speech, O.G. He did not invent the phrase, but he made sure the world would never forget it.

Ice-T / IG / Ice-T made it clear that ‘OG.’ was already alive in Los Angeles long before his album dropped. The term came from street culture and gang language, where it meant Original Gangster or first-generation member of a set.
It carried weight and respect in neighborhoods that rarely received either.
When Ice-T released “O.G. Original Gangster” in 1991, he pushed that street term into the mainstream. He saw how the media labeled rap music and decided to take control of the narrative. If reporters wanted to call it gangster rap, he would claim the top spot and define it himself.
The “Colors” rapper explained that early hip-hop that talked about harsh street life was once labeled reality rap. He pushed back on that phrase because it did not describe everyone’s reality. After “Straight Outta Compton” by N.W.A changed the tone of coverage, the press leaned hard into the phrase gangster rap.
Ice-T saw an opening and moved fast. He decided that if the label stuck, he would brand himself as the Original Gangster. That move locked the phrase into pop culture and made it part of global slang.
No Blueprint for Fame
Ice-T started rapping in the early 1980s, when hip-hop was still fighting for space. He said he never expected to become huge because there was no example to follow. There was no rap superstar blueprint at the time.
He pointed out that artists today can look at someone like Drake and see what success looks like. Back then, even pioneers like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were still grinding without major rewards. The industry was not built yet, so the ceiling felt low.
Ice-T admitted that he believed in himself, but he did not picture global fame. He just knew he had something to say and the nerve to say it. That mindset shaped albums like “Rhyme Pays” and “Power,” which built his name step by step.
He described “O.G. Original Gangster” as a turning point that came three albums into his run. By then, he had sharpened his voice and built an audience that trusted him. The success still surprised him, but he was ready for it when it arrived.
Motivation Over Fame

Ice-T / IG / Ice-T’s drive did not come from dreams of red carpets. It came from loss, pride, and a need to prove himself. After losing both parents, he was raised by his aunt in South Central Los Angeles and attended Crenshaw High School.
The rapper stayed out of gang trouble by forming smart friendships and keeping his head up. He once described that strategy as having diplomatic immunity, because he earned respect without joining a crew. That survival skill shaped how he moved through life and business.
Before rap took off, he served four years in the Army. A sergeant told him he was only there because he could not make it as a civilian. That comment stuck with him and fueled his grind for years.
